Please help! my sago palm is dying and I don't know what else to do :(

Hello, everybody!

I'm writing here because I don't know what else to do to get my sago to improve his health.

This dear plant was given to me by my late father, so I am very attached to it. For a couple of years now it has not given off any new buds and little by little its leaves have been turning yellow and withering. The plant is about six years old so I thought the cause was its small pot, so two months ago I transplanted it into a new, more spacious pot.

I have also taken great care with its lighting (it receives direct sun in the morning and then indirect sun, which I have reinforced with a special UV led for plants). I have also taken care of giving it the right watering and I gave it some fertilizers to stimulate its growth (late autumn around here). Unfortunately, one by one its leaves have been withering and I only have two healthy leaves left, and I can already see that one is starting to lose its coloration so I don't know if it will last much longer :(

Here are some pictures of how the plant looks now. I would be very grateful for any advice to improve its condition. Thank you!

It is a cycad and you may have used the wrong kind of compost which needs to be soil based rather than MPC stuff which gets too claggy.  They also like a humid atmosphere so I would advise getting a bottle mister and giving it a daily dose of water sprayed on and around the foliage.

Have a read of this info from the RHS and see if it helps -

I too put my houseplants outside for summer and if we don't get rain I rinse them down when going round with the hosepipe watering them and all the other stuff.

It's a long time since I had a cycad but I was advised they do need misting in a centrally heated house and I ended up giving it to a friend who needed plants for a huge bathroom in their new house.

  • Thanks for the advice. The plant is a Cyca, more particularly a Sago Palm. I just repotted to a new pot, not so big, using a better soil with good drainage.

    Let's hope it survives 🙏
