  • Depends on how warm the spring is but late April- May if mild May -June in a "normal " year if there's such a thing these days. Coding moths , & winter moths are entirely different.  Winter moth females are wingless so they crawl up the trunk that is how the grease bands work.

  • Thanks for that Allotment Boy.  I've just  applied a grease band and bought a pheromone trap.  Hope to enjoy ALL the pears next year!

  • I melted some vaseline and soaked a j-cloth in it, and wrapped it around the trunk - will that work to stop ants climbing up and farming cherry blackflies?

    Someone I know tried doing that with a fruit tree and found that the tree died above the Vaseline.
