my wife says the same about our garden having too many ugly things @Fairygirl but funnily enough she's always looking at me when she says it 😭😭
I agree that I put too much time into the compost, I'd undoubtedly say anyone else doing the same was rather strange. Thing is I just can't help myself. I wouldn't have room for all the waste if I didn't deal with it rapidly as it would take up too much room. I'd also feel hard done by throwing it all away as it's all stuff that some way or another has cost me money and I want something back in return 🤣yes Yorkshire men are tight

Your composting is probably similar to the 'lawn' which is mostly a man thing. There's a tiny garden near me, with a front lawn which gets virtually no sun at any time of year. It's like a tiny snooker table. The chap who lives there must spend a huge amount of time keeping it like that. Mind you, his wife is probably just glad he's not under her feet....
You're preaching to the converted when it comes to being tight too
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
I guess you can put into a bin whatever you like, but the worry is usually attracting rodents. If you have cool bins and you and your neighbours don't mind the threat of rats, you can knock yourself out. As far as I know, none of here have a rat or mice problem (no evidence of it) and I am not about to start one.
When I took over this compostbigthere were lots of quite big branches, as in half the bin, so I took most of them out when I was turning it, but I did notice lots of mice, I hope that's not a problem 😕 Well, we have 2 cats in any case...
Also, am so surprised you can put cotton wool in! Is that really true @Fire because if so I use a lot for my baby, so maybe can put it in there!
Also, I found some compostable litter for the cats, which we have switched to. But is it ok for the cat poop to go in there too?
You can put in anything that happily biogrades - so as long as cotton wool is actually cotton, you're fine. Baby wipes made of paper or natural materials are also fine.
My compost is weedy, but they're my weeds so I know what to expect - nothing really awful. I just hoe them or pick them out of the containers. I'm not a fastidious gardener so I don't mind the odd weed - but only the pretty ones get left.
I add most things ( that will rot, obviously) but not cooked food, meat or fats. Coarse, thickish branches I normally don't bother with. Strangely things like eggshells don't seem to rot down in my heap but I'm always adding which I think stops it cooking as fast as a heap which left to "do its thing" Depending on where it's intended, I'll sometimes sieve the finished product and put the coarse stuff back on the heap.
