Bottle Brush Bush

I've had a bottle brush bush for some years now and it has never been pruned.  As a result it has become rather overgrown and out of control.  I have taken some cuttings, which I am hoping will root.  However, if I was to cut it hard back, it is likely to kill it or will it regrow?

Pruning back hard should be fine for most Callistemon shrubs, but best not to prune too late in the year. They are not that hardy, and new growth will be easily damaged by the winter weather.
