Harvesting sunflower seeds

I wasn’t sure whether this should be in plant category or not. Harvesting sunflower seeds to both eat and save seeds for next year - how and when are you doing it?

The heads are hanging, some are showing yellow so are drying, I’ve cut the leaves from them now to tidy it and get rud of aphids. There are still some ants on one, hopefully they move soon.  Have you cut the heads off yet? Do you eat the seeds? How do you hull them if so? Questions questions.

You'd gave to get to them before the squirrels here
    In London. Keen but lazy.
  • I don't eat them, but I do save some seeds for next year. Mine are still well in flower, a while to go yet before seeds form for me. I'll leave them on the plant, the squirrels and birds do get most of them. I'll simply push out a handful of seeds for storage whenever I remember, and leave the plant intact. If it gets too late autumn and frosts, and there are still seeds in the heads, I'll cut them off and hang the heads upside down from a tree so the birds get a meal.
  • I’ve cut 2 big ones and a little one to experiment drying out, I’ve left the rest out there. Lovely design on the big ones🌻
  • And I’m not sure about about eating them after I googled and someone said they saw maggots in them 😬
  • Ive left mine drying outside in the BBQ, hoping the rascally squirrels don’t find it.
