Gooseberry not fruiting

I’m a novice gardener. First year my potted gooseberry plant was eaten alive not once but twice by Sawfly. So I bought a cylindrical tomato hothouse, turned it upside down and put fine mesh on the open top to keep the Sawfly out. The plant is doing well, grown a foot, new branches and lots of leaves but no fruit. Can it stay in a container? Does it need a pair for pollinating? In How do I protect the plant and stop Sawfly? Many Thanks GW

  • Agree with Panseyface.
We have sawfly issues but fortunately they attack after the flowers have been pollinated.
Yes you have to keep the plant open to the pollinators.
Shaking the plant with some cover underneath can also help to dislodge the sawfly caterpillars which you can then get rid off.
  • Dear Pansyface and Bertrand-Mabel, Thank you so much for your advice. I shall let the Goiseberry out of its gilded cage and hopefully spot those pesky Sawflies early on. Much appreciated.
