Beginner to this so really need help with Apple trees this year, think we have cut this one too hard at begin in of year so we have no apples this year but how do we prune this year to make sure we get apples next year????
Yes winter pruning generates lots of weak growth like you have. Summer pruning now or any time before the middle of September will stimulate spurs & fruit. Where you have 3 or more thin stems close together cut the middle ones right out to increase spacing. Take out any weak crossing or damaged shoots. With remaining shoots look for a cluster of leaves at the base then count 3 -4 leaves up and cut there keeping an eye on the overall shape. If this seems too drastic you could spread this work over 2 or more seasons till you get the shape and the fruit you want. There is loads of pruning advice in the GW mag and website also on RHS website.
