What is this plant/weed?

Our garden has been a building a site for about 1 year. This plant has sprouted up in a few places from - seems to spread by rhizomes. Weed killer is having some effect, but I'd prefer to dig out the root and stop it that way. Any idea what it is?

Those look like suckers from tree roots ... either an existing tree nearby or one that has been felled or severely pruned in the last few years.

You need SBK brushwood killer or similar to deal with those... always hearing in mind that if the parent tree is still in existence the chemicals are likely to travel back through the roots and damage the tree.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • Thank you! That probably explains it. I'll grab a mattock. Will need to check what trees the neighbours have.
