Fuchsia Problem

Hi I have a big problem with my fuchsia's in my front and back garden. Some of them are quite old. The ends of the branches, flowers and leaves are very distorted. I have had to cut a lot of them back. Can anyone help? Does anyone know what it is I have. Lynn

  • Hi,
Could be fuchsia gall mite (?)
  • Thank you I did wonder that, do you know how to manage it ?
  • I'm sure there are loads of people on here who will have better knowledge than me but as I understand it, there's no treatment.  I had it on several fuchsias last year and cut off the affected shoots a.s.a.p. and got rid of them, fed and watered well.  The hardy fuchsia is not (so far) showing signs of it this year but the non-hardy one kept getting it so I had to get rid of the whole plant, so as not to infect my others.  Hope that helps.
  • That's what I was afraid of and I have quite a few.
    Thank you for your help

I had gall mite a couple or so years ago. I cut the fuschia back and left it over winter and it was ok again the following year. I had read that 'they' weren't sure what low temperature the mite could survive so I took a chance that couple of frosts would kill it off.

...I always doubt myself after I've said anything - so I just double checked:

I had thought at first that I'd have to get rid of the fuschias (it had affected all three), but all of them bounced back.

To be honest.  Forget all the fears etc of gall mites and whatever.  Your plant has grown back to it's original form.  Fair do's some perhaps unwanted visitors may be present but.  The overall growth suggests it's return to it's natural state.

Suggest that if you prfer a more open kind of plant.  Then set about cutting back and shaping to your preference.
  • Thank you I have had to cut back eight old and large hardy fuchsia s
I think I should have cut the distorted parts has soon has I spotted them
I will keep a stricter check next year
I have had to cut four old hardy ones in the back garden and a few non hardy ones
I am keeping an eye on my others
