Kniphofia Red Hot Pokers - 40cm shorter this year and flowering late

Hi, we have Kniphofia in our front garden, you can just see the orange of their flowers in this picture. The fence to the rear is south facing so the sun comes through it into the garden.

This year, the kniphofia is about 40cm shorter and has only just flowered in the last 2 weeks (August) which feels late.

To be honest, we overlooked feeding the garden bar once in early May, this may have had an impact, but nothing else in the garden has been stunted by this.

As can be seen from the pictures, there impact has been diminished by their low height.

Please can anyone advise how we can improve height next year please?

It might be the fertiliser, but I think much more likely to do with the dry weather and/or competition and shading from the surrounding plants.

  • I agree that it is the watering. We never feed our plants and they always flower in August. The plants are in a very crowded bed but they do grow up and beyond the other plants and so we do have a spectacular flourish this time of year. The bees love them.
