Trimming brassica leaves?

Hi all.
I am growing cabbages, cauliflowers and brocoli in a raised bed and from the day the plugs were planted it has been covered with a frame of netting.
As the plants have grown considerably in size, the odd plant has a leaf touching the netting and this morning I noticed a hole in one of the leaves and a caterpillar looking very pleased with itself! Those crafty cabbage white butterflies (which we have seen quite a few if flying around this year!) have obviously managed to lay eggs on the leaf through the netting.
I have removed the offending creature but if the leaves keep touching the net then it is inevitable that there will be more.
I was wondering if I could cut the end of the leaves in question to keep them away from the netting or if this will damage the plant in some way?
I don't have any way to make the netting enclosure any bigger than it already is or that would be my first option.
Thanks in advance.

  • I've had exactly the same problem and have cut away several leaves. The plants continued to grow and heads of broccoli appeared. The butterflies are, however, crafty and can get through the holes in my netting so it has been a case of regularly taking off the frame and removing any eggs or caterpillars.

Thanks BevRobson 😊  I cut the biggest leaves back away from the netting and it doesn't seem to have had a negative effect on the plant. It's growing so quickly though there's more touching the netting now!
