help for identity please

A friends daughter in law bought this plant in a cheap end of the day sale but doesn't know what it is.  She said it had a purple flower on earlier in the year 

Can anyone help please

    It might be a clematis but the camera angle may have distorted it.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

    she has sent another pic -- she is looking after it for someone on holiday but it wasnt looking in the best of health
