Tale of 2 Honeysuckles

About 5 years ago I planted 2 honeysuckles. One was shaded by a large tree & despite growing as well as the sunnier one, it didn't flower. This year my neighbours cut down the tree & it flowered for the first time but all the leaves have fallen off.   I am baffled.  It looks so strange, lots of flowers - no leaves. (The other one is fine & flowering ok).

Honeysuckles are woodland plants that prefer a cool base around the roots, but always flower better with a bit of sun. It's possible that the dry and warm weather has caused your plant to lose its leaves. This happens when plants need to survive. It is probably dry or the leaves frazzled by the excessive heat and sun.

Give it a big drink - at least 10 litres - and repeat daily for a week then every other day till autumn rains set in.

You need to moisten the roots thoroughly and down deep, not just the surface, and it should recover.

  • Many thanks for your replies, have given it lots of water but still a bit doubtful as my garden has mostly plants in containers & I am out with my hose frequently. I always give the honeysuckles & clematis a drink too, recently there has been quite a few heavy downpours too.  I will step up the watering & cross my (not very green) fingers. :)
