Coating on apples

Apples in several neighbouring gardens in The Dordogne have a dust like film which rubs off when thumbed & also washes off. The skin is unblemished & the apple is whole when cut in half.Photo attached

Forgive the question, but are they definitely apples?  Quince fruit look a little like apples and have that soft, peach-like covering...

Did you have any Saharan dust storms? Is it only the fruit which has the coating or do leaves have it too?

Just wondering whether this is something @D0rdogne_Damsel might have heard something about ... I know she’s busy but she might have heard of it 🤔
