Hi Cull, It appears that Swansea Uni did research on this invasive plant and I read that a
glyphosate proved best, I had this problem with a house we were going to buy in Wales and an expert said it takes around 2 to 3 seasons to clear it as it has to be done around Autumn to allow being taken into the root system, spraying top or cutting top growth will hinder the problem getting rid, please understand I'm no pro but we decided not to buy so  I can't give you anymore info, although it looks like knot weed be certain first, And  DONT let an amateur touch it,
    Good luck,Alan4711

    noun: glyphosate
    1. a synthetic compound which is a non-selective systemic herbicide, particularly effective against perennial weeds

  • I think your landlady needs to seek advice from her property insurers. If JKW spreads from her property to another I think I’m right in saying she could find herself facing a claim from neighbouring property owners ... I may be wrong on that, but Id seek advice anyway.

    Edited to say...

    I found this https://www.gov.uk/guidance/prevent-japanese-knotweed-from-spreading

it confirms that your landlady could find herself facing legal action
if the JKW spreads onto neighbouring properties

But the JKW is coming from another garden, not hers

    Thank you

I've spoken to the neighbours next door and apparently they are aware of the knotweed problem it stems from the houses that back onto our gardens.

He said that one of the neighbours couldn't sell a house because of it 😳

He also said that he's live there for just over 20 years and as long as it's kept cut down it should be fine

You cannot get a mortgage on a property with JKW in the garden. Your landlady and her neighbours really need to take some action. The value of their investments are being seriously affected.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
