Gertrude Jekyll rose help, please

HelenMFHelenMF Posts: 13
Hi, hope someone can help with this, please.  Two photos of my GJ rose - the second photo shows a very tall shoot that has suddenly shot up at the back of the rose bush  - is it a sucker or part of the rose ? The leaves are a lot bigger and thicker than the rest - should I just cut it off ?

Thanks.

A normal shoot. She wants to climb.

Thank you.  I was about to snip it off. It looks wrong somehow but good to know it’s natural growth.

I’ve read very recently that nearly all red canes are true and not suckers.

To distinguish between suckers and shoots, try to find out where they start.  Anything growing from above the union, (where the variety is grafted onto the host) is true, anything growing from below or out of the soil is wild. If you grow from cuttings,  everything is the variety.
My Gertrude is also growing two very long shoots. As I have another new rose which is labelled a climber but at present looks like a shrub I wondered if their labels had been mixed up. The flowers show that they were labelled correctly. Isn't gardening wonderful. You never know for sure how they will turn out.

Mine's doing the same. At this rate, it will soon be higher than the hedge behind!
