Burn/melt marks on artificial grass

I have had artificial grass in my garden for 5 years without a problem. On returning from holiday this week I have found that the 'grass' has what appears to be 15 to 20 burn marks scattered across it (lawn is 7m x 15m). Each burn is approx. the size of a fist and all the blades of grass have totally burned/melted away.

Having read around the web I see that extreme heat exposure can cause this (particularly reflection off windows), but I just do not see how this can have happened in my garden. Despite the heat of recent days, much of the garden is in the shade most of the day (courtesy of a large oak tree) and has not got remotely close to the temperature required to risk melting.

I thought maybe firework debris, but there is no debris to be found in the garden (and my neighbour also with artificial grass) has had no problems. Also no local reports of fireworks.

I am at a loss of what might have happened - could it be fox urine, something from the tree or even an issue from beneath the artificial grass? Any thoughts/theories highly appreciated.

Have you any windows that overlook you. I was thinking of some bored youngster with a mirror?

I think you need to contact the suppliers for advice and, maybe, your insurance company if it needs replacing.

  • I guess it must come with a multi-year warranty. Whether the supplier has any interest to come back is another matter.

We have the windows of our house and neighbours, but they are at least 10 meters away. Would that be too far? I’ve also checked the last couple of days to check for any signs of a reflection. There is none.

It’s a total mystery right now.
  • Maybe time to replace it with some gravel and call it a day? Five years doesn't seem too bad for a piece of plastic...

But you are now about whereas it happened while you were away.
I have artificial grass with garden mirrors that do reflect onto it but no signs of damage.

Local kids having a glue sniffing party while you were away?  Solvents will melt plastic too.  I came home early once to find a couple of bikes where I park my car, and two kids round the back playing football on my lawn. I soon put a tall gate up and a padlock on it.
  • Any view of whether animal wee can do the damage? Or if the damage might have occurred from beneath rather than above?

I think you need to consult with the manufacturers and suppliers and also maybe accept that during your absence, someone has been in causing mischief.

Time to check your warranty and insurance and maybe get a CCTV or wildlife/trail camera if you plan to go away again.
