I have a pot grown cherry tree that I have had for approx. six years. I have never pruned it. I need to know since it it so small should I prune it without damaging or losing fruit bearing branches. If I should WHERE EXACTLY  should I prune it from and WHEN. I attach a picture of the tree to assist you in my inquiry.

Have you had it in that same pot for 6 years?  If so I would imagine it would appreciate a bigger pot and some fresh compost.

The main thing to know about cherries (and plums) is never to prune in winter as this encourages an infection called silver leaf.   Some pruning can be done in spring to remove any stems that have been damaged by winter weather.  You need to follow the rule of the 3 Ds and remove dead, damaged and/or diseased wood.

The main pruning is done in mid summer but what and how depends on whether you're aiming for an espalier shape or a bushier form.   I suggest you have a read of this info from the RHS and follow the links to more info:

One other tip - if you post another question on another topic, put that in the title rather than your name.  You'll get more answers.

  • Thank you for your prompt reply. In answer to your questions- yes, I have had it in the same pot all the time. I generally remove whatever compost I can remove easily from the top and replace with new compost mixed with manure and  seaweed solution

Then I think it deserves a treat.  If you can't get it in the ground at least give it a better pot so it can spread its roots a bit.
