The tree is gone, baby...

  • I’ll be joining you soon.  Going to take down this pine at the end of summer.  Always seems a shame to rip something living out of the ground but I’m going to replant with a tree that gives better year round interest and will be better for wildlife.

Did you try and remove the roots?

I wouldn't be sorry to see that one go!

Me neither really!  The annoying thing is I actually have 2 of them.  This one will stay (until nobody notices and I will chop that down too)

I didn't bother trying to get the roots out. That kind of tree won't grow back and it was too much of a pain to try and get a stump grinder into the back garden. I might try the same approach I took in the front of building a little raised bed around it, or maybe a compost bin from woven branches. The soil will need help after having that big tree over it for years.

So after some more hedge cutting I ended up with this pile of branches, so I made a compost bin thing. I don't plan to put any food waste in there so hopefully it won't attract anything except mini beasts. I had to stop chopping and clean up because we had a friend over for socially distant drinks but I intend to cut the hedge more. This project has generated way more stuff than I can fit in the green bin so I have had to get creative with places to put all the bits I've cut off!
