Saw fly damage?

CopperdogCopperdog Posts: 617
I had this euonymus in a pot under a berberis that got shredded last year by some sort of saw fly. One day it had leaves and the next it didn’t! The berberis being deciduous recovered fine the following year. Will this little evergreen recover or should I just get rid of it? Many thanks

It doesn't look very well. I'm pestered with saw flies and the damage I suffer isn't like that. The leaves are rolled up by the caterpillars which eat holes in the leaves. Your plant looks as though it has become leggy due to lack of light and dry because it was sheltered by the berberis. If you water it and keep it in a cool shady place whilst the weather is hot it might regrow from the bottom, but I wouldn't hold your breath. I would regard trying to get it going again as a bit of a challenge. There does appear to be a sprig of growth already so where there's life there's hope.

I agree with Joy*, your shrub is losing its leaves due to lack of light and water. The pot looks pretty small for the size of plant, and I suspect the roots are compacted inside the pot. Even to keep that plant watered will be quite a challenge.

It needs re-potting or planting out. But, it is barely hanging in there. I would have the whole shrub pruned back to 3-4 inches and see whether it revives.
