Hardy succulents for hanging baskets

Years ago our street (which is very much a community) was given three pairs of hanging baskets. They are very high up on the lampposts so difficult to care for and water, and everything we've tried growing in them has died.

I think that hardy succulents might be the answer. The street is a sheltered cul-de-sac, gets a lots of sun in the summer and very little snow or ice in the winter (we're in Peckham, south London).

Can anyone recommend some suitable plants? It would be nice to have some that grow upwards and some that trail downwards and of course interesting flowers would be a bonus!

Thank you!

I have 3 baskets of Sedum confusum.
Easy to grow, hardly ever water even in the current heatwave, yellow flowers early summer and evergreen year round.
Sedum palmerii and Euphorbia myrsinites are other contenders.
Some of the smaller sedums would probably also work.

  • Thank you so much, you’ve convinced me that this is the way to go. Thank you so much for your recommendations. Would you advise planting up the baskets this year or next year so as to avoid the winter?

I did my baskets (cuttings directly into the basket) in November last year into a gritty compost and hung them up straight away.I was a little worried as these particular baskets have a reservoir and thought the cuttings might rot but they came through it all. They went through a whole wet winter and now a dry summer.Probably watered 3 times.I do have a lot of this sedum in my garden so not difficult to get cuttings.I will give them maybe a year or two and then re-do the baskets from scratch.Just have to see how they fare in the future!
