I grow my toms in the greenhouse border. I always grow 8 plants.
I always plant basil (about 8 plants) and French marigolds (about 10) around the plants too to deter whitefly.
And so far.... I've never had any problems with any beasties on my toms. over many years.
The conditions are ideal for basil too and they grow into big plants.
Just keep removing the flowerheads as they appear and they'll keep growing all season and provide the ideal accompaniment for your delicious toms!

I grow basil next to the tomatoes as well but mainly for snacking purposes  :D

Make sure you get the French marigolds and not the African marigolds or there will be no room for your tomatoes :)
