Hydrangea Help Needed

VoyagerxpVoyagerxp Posts: 651
My neighbor has this hydrangea she pruned off all the dead blooms end of last year. This year it has had no blooms at all, i don't know much about hydrangeas so i thought i'd post on here to see what she may have done wrong.

  • Looks like a macrophylla, presumable she cut off the old growth that it flowers on. There's lots of dead wood and also it's in a pretty small pot...if it was mine, I'd give it an extreme haircut (in early spring) and move it to a larger container or the ground and forgo flowers next season but have no ugly dead wood and a better structure long term. Last year's season's flowers are usually removed around March time so they provide a bit of protection to the plant over the harsh winter months and it's easy enough to tell the revival of the eyes on the stems that will give the flower that year.

Hydrangeas have to be that rare plant that it's so easy to look after when you know what you're doing and a total nightmare if you haven't looked into the requirements of the variety at hand.
