We have a clump of gorgeous tall lilies ((about 6ft) which we would like to move. They have been in place at least 10 years. Is it just a case of digging them up in autumn and replanting? Are there any special requirements?
This type of lily never goes completely dormant and always has some live white roots below, so you have to be quite careful when digging-up. Wait until the stems have died-back and can easily be pulled away, then dig up, trying to preserve as many of the white roots as you can and replant at the same depth. They grow feeding roots from the part of the stem which is below ground and those also help to support the tall stems, so the bulbs need to be planted deep, with fertile soil above the bulb being more important than that below, which must be well drained.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
