Russian Vine Problem

Hi everyone

I hope you're all ok, i'm new here so apologies of this is in the wrong section. I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on Russian Vine. Our garden was filled with conifers and we overlook Swansea Bay so during lockdown we chopped them all down (to be able to actually see the sea 😁) we found a fence behind them going up our garden (we live up a mountain so our garden is steepish) and all of a sudden from nowhere this Russian Vine has gone mad. It's completely taken over our garden coming from the mountain to the point you can't even see the fence anymore!

Sorry for the long post but i just wondered if the Council or someone has a responsibilty to keep it under control or sort out the problem?

Any help would be much appreciated 😁
Thank you
Em

Hello and welcome to the forum  :)
I don't know the legal ramifications of it coming from land owned by the council,  but as soon as it pokes its nose over your fence, l think you are entitled to deal with it.
I think the best thing to do first off is to hack it back to your boundary line . I know others on here have had similar problems in the past and may well be able to advise.

When we moved here there was a rampaging Russian Vine ... a careful and targeted application of Roundup glyphosate spray strictly according to instructions ... then leave for three weeks until it’s brown then pull it up and or cut it down. You may have to repeat a couple of times ... but by next summer it’ll be history and you’ll be able to enjoy the gorgeous view.
Can you just give a wave to my son who is staying with cousins over on the Gower this week 😎 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

  • Thank you both for the replies, i thought it may be wishful thinking that they would be able to do anything 😄 unfortunately we are unable to get to any roots or anywhere near them as it's up the mountain and is so dense with greenery.

Thank you 🙏  if you’ve got binoculars 😉 he’s the tall one with the beard who looks like a roadie ... ‘cos that’s part of what he does

I’d spray the invading segment with roundup every spring. It’ll translocations back to the roots because that’s how it works ... at least that’ll weaken it.
If it’s on public land I would at least try speaking to your local councillor ... he or she may have a bit of leverage to get it cut back every year which will at least control it a bit.
If you get a group of neighbours to write in that may help.
    Good luck 👍
