Hawthorn hedge

We have recent moved into a house with a hawthorn hedge on the front. It hasn't been pruned (if ever) for years and over hangs onto the pavment too far. It needs taking back by about a foot. Can this be done and it recover as will obviously be back to bare wood? I don't want to lose it if possible.
Thanks

Yes you can cut hawthorn hard back ... in fact it’ll do it good because it’ll encourage it to thicken up. You can even cut hawthorn down to the ground and it’ll regrow. If you can leave it until Jan/Feb that’s a good time to do it as it means it’ll be bare for less time ... but you can do it at any time ... hawthorn is tough as old boots. It survived being constantly munched by cows, goats and sheep on our former smallholding 😊
