Hi there I’m wondering if anyone can shed any light in this awful plant/weed that has been sprouting up randomly across my garden? It appears in the borders, on the edges of the lawn and is even under my paving flags. It seems to have a very thick root wrapping itself all around the garden with shoots popping up everywhere. It’s very worrying hope someone can help (see pics uploaded) many thanks
Hi @Rimbolener and welcome to the forum ... It's not Japanese Knotweed ... you can breathe
It looks to me like suckering tree roots ... are there or have there been any trees with similar leaves in the vicinity? ... could be 20 or 30 feet away ... especially something in the prunus family ... their roots often throw up suckers (saplings) especially if the mother tree has been severely pruned or felled.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
I’m not knowledgeable enough to tell you what it is but I can tell you what it isn’t and that is Japanese knotweed. These are suckers coming up from the roots of a nearby parent plant, an issue we have with wild damson shoots in the front lawn. I don’t think you have a damson and some of the photos make me think of something from the dogwood family. One indicator of dogwood is to pull the leaf gently in half. The two bits will stay connected by the thinnest of threads, so fine they are almost invisible.
To eradicate it I fear you’ll have to take out the parent plant - hopefully in your garden and not a neighbours - and systematically try to dig out the major roots.
Has anyone felled a poplar? Could be Populus candicans 'Aurora'. Poplars are notorious for regenerating from the roots after felling. Some public gardens will insert herbicide plugs into the stump to kill the resulting arisings. I'm sure this is what has happened.
