Leaves on Clematis

Could anyone tell me what they think this is on my clematis leaves? At first I thought it was a fungal infection but now I am not so sure. It's only on some of the leaves towards the outer section of what has been a very healthy plant.

  • Possibly too much nitrogen, have you been feeding it ?

  • No, over the years we have done very little to it but it has always come back and flowered beautifully. It has this year too and it’s only in the last day or so the leaves have changed.

Could it just be thirsty?   April and May were so dry in some areas that the water table will have lowered significantly and now it's really hot so try giving it generous drinks of water - 10 to 15 litres at a time poured slowly so it soaks in.   Repeat daily for a week and then every few days till you get some serious rain.

  • Wil try that, thanks. Being in Scotland we have extremes of weather, days, or parts of days, where it is chucking down with rain, and then lots of sunshine so will try and keep well watered. I did wonder about this because the leaves that look rough are on the outside/around the edges but the ones almost protected in the middle are ok. Just wanted to check it wasn't any disease as our rose bush has come down with black spot this year and a newly planted hydrangea has slightly strange marks on its leaves too but think they are all unrelated.

Black spot on roses is not unusual but your newly planted hydrangea may also be thirsty.

I often get that on my clematis too @marieduley, especially the more exposed ones.
I don't feed mine much either, but they get a bit battered during the season here  ;)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • That's good to hear, thank you
