Acer with bark damage

We have an established red acer, the canopy is not showing any problems as yet but there is damage to the bark. Any ideas what it is or how we can protect the tree please? There are several thick branches and the damage is showing quite badly on at least 2 of them... thank you

    Do you have woodpeckers in your area?  If there are beetle larvae under the bark maybe woodpeckers have been after them ... 🤔

    We do have woodpeckers so that may be the cause, any idea what I can do to repair the damage please?
