Monstera needs urgent help! 🙏

Hello everyone,

my two Monsteras are suffering and I'm struggling to identify the problem, therefore I don't know how to proceed. I suspect there might be more than one cause and I need help from you.

The picture below shows how my plants used to be: Monstera Mama on the left - I bought her three years ago and she went from 50cm to 2 metres high, never had a single problem, we'd always found the perfect balance light-water-moisture; Monstera Daughter on the right - she's a cutting from Mama and if I remember correctly she's one year and something old, again never an issue.

Unfortunately, a few months ago something started to go very wrong despite none of the environment conditions had changed. Since there was the lockdown I attempted to rescue them trying to do what I could from home.
I changed the watering pattern and kept the room's humidity checked. But I have a lot of other (house, tropical and succulent) plants and they are all perfectly healthy and happy.
And then I changed the position to a spot with more light (not direct light).
I am afraid in doing so I weakened the plants even more.

The leaves started to turn yellow and then brown and fall off. The damage would start from the border inwards. I thought it could be root rot that's why I assumed changing the watering timing would help.

And then, on closer inspection, I started to see thrips infestation. I cleaned the whole plant with soapy-water for a couple of weeks. While I had to say goodbye to many leaves by this point, there were many new baby leaves and all healthy! I was so happy and so relieved.

But in a matter of a few weeks, probably a month, the new leaves started to get awful brown spots again.

It is a disaster.
The daughter seems better. The new leaves are still healthy. I'm keeping the two plants separated just in case.
But Mama is a complete disaster.

My plan for Mama is:
- remove the plant from the pot, remove the soil and check for root rot
- once she's naked I'll cut damaged leaves (all of them???😭)/roots
- I'll spray store-bought insecticidal soap all over her and follow instructions
- I'll let the cuts to dry
- repot her in completely new soil
- wait and hope

Is my plan ok? What would you do?
Should I cut the long stems and water-propagate the new cuttings or can I try to rescue her in her whole majestic beauty?
I am thinking to leave Daughter as she is...???
Please, any advice or suggestion is very very welcome!

I am completely heartbroken. She's my favourite. Please help us.

Lisa

I'm sorry you are so distraught over your plant but to me if my dog was that poorly with no chance of recovery I would consider it a kindness to put her to sleep,
But saying that cuttings are worth trying as you obviously have had success in the past.
