Problems with Butternut squash

Hey All,

I need help! I'm quite a newbie to growing veg and am having some trouble with my butternut squash. I have many young squashes that start out really well but all of them bar one so far have turned brown and shriveled up. I initially thought this was a fertilisation problem as I had the plant under netting but there has been no improvement since removing this. I also read it could possibly be a lack in calcium? I planted the young plant in compost and once it started producing veg I started feeding it with Tomorite about once a week. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Classically "blossom end rot" usually affects tomatoes but I guess it could be affecting your squashes too, maybe someone on here will know for sure. If it is that,  yes it's lack of calcium,  but the cause is erratic water supply. It has been very hard in this heat to keep plants well watered with a steady supply rather than lots one day & none the next. They are big thirsty plants, if watering with a can give a whole large can 2 gal (10 litres) per plant apply the water to the soil around. If you have some spare compost or mulch apply that after a good soak to try to keep area moist.

Thanks for the advice, I have been struggling with this erratic weather to get the watering right. I will try this.
