Is this tree dead?

This tree is in my parent's front garden. I'm having a debate with my father. He thinks it is fine and 'just needs water' (we live in Ireland so have plenty). I think it won't ever grow back and should be removed/replanted.

Any thoughts from personal experience?

Many thanks,
Matthew.

    That's very dead  :D

apart from the tiny bit of green hanging on for dear life......

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • It looks like a conifer. We have similar issues and have cut out the dead branches and are allowing the remaining bush to grow up. Cut back sections in most conifers will not regenerate.
The main part does look dead.

Dead or very soon will be.  These trees don't grow shoots from brown wood if you cut them back past the green needles.  Out with the ugly brute! :D

    I agree with you.
Conifers do not grow  back from brown wood, so even if the branches are not technically dead yet, it will never look any better.
  • Thanks for your help guys. First post here, amazed by the rapid response. I'll be able to use this to support my case for removal. He has trouble letting go!

Maybe you could offer to replace it with something nice that he can enjoy looking after  :)

  • He's going to try and revive it somehow. Will see what happens...

Well, by the time he gives up, the roots will have started to rot so at least it'll be easier to remove. :D

Obviously a man who likes a challenge ... or was the tree baptised Lazarus?

There is no hope for it ... none whatsoever ... tell him if he revives that I'll eat my hat
