What flower is this?

Good afternoon everyone,

Could anybody please let me know what plant this is what we have in our garden.
It has a lovely fragrance and I would love to buy some more, but just do not know what it is?

Many thanks in anticipation for your help

Dianthus barbatus (Sweet William) I think.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

It's a Sweet William, dianthus barbatus.

I agree - you could save the seed and sow it and you'll have more

  • Thank you all for helping to clear that up for us so we know what plant it is, a silly question but how do we save the seeds To sow them?
    many thanks

You can see the brown seed pods in the 2nd pic after the flower has dropped off.
Once the pod turns brown, you can probably see the seeds inside.
When they seeds are black  you can sow them.
I cut off the whole head when all the flowers are done and the pods are brown and shake it into a glass there are hundreds of seeds.

  • That’s brilliant, thank you so much for that advice we will be looking to do that for sure, when is the best time to sow the seeds? And can they be sewn into this large pot as we do not have a greenhouse?

Bear in mind they are biennial so if you sow the seeds asap and they germinate, overwinter the young plants in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse and many will flower next year.  If you sow them in spring then it will be summer 2022 before they flower.  If you don't mind buying them, you can get plugs right now which you overwinter in small pots in the same way and those will definitely flower next year. :)

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to explain that, I will definitely follow your advice hopefully next year will see some more beautiful flowers of this type.
    Kind regards
