Clematis?

I have this clematis, planted about 20.Yrs ago. 2 years ago it suddenly started to go mad. We cut it back every week and it is now obviously in the wrong place.  My question is, what is it and when is the best time to.move it, while it's growing or wait until it finishes flowering which will be about November, or wait u til spring ?

    Not clematis.
Looks like a solanum of some kind.

Agree. Probably too old to move now and would you have anywhere for it to grow unrestricted?
  • Hi Fairygirl, that's Interesting. I bought it at a boot sale about 20 years ago, from a  sole trader and sure it was marked as a clematis, but must admit I have been scratching my head ever since and scanning through my reference books.  However, the same question applies, when would be the best time to.move it.,  it has.become a real bully and impacting on my neighbour (entering his conservatory) I dont want to get rid of it as I love it and have the perfect place in which to transplant it, but don't want to loose it.
Your advice would be most welcome.

I agree it's not a clematis.  I wouldn't try to move it either but you could hack it back hard and see what happens.  Maybe take some cuttings just in case.

They aren't hardy here so I have no experience of them I'm afraid.
I expect you could just water it well, and try and dig it out over the next month or so if you have somewhere to put it.
Someone else who has grown them may be able to offer better advice though.

  • I have the perfect place for it and have taken 8 cuttings into perlite (fingers crossed). It is only in the last 2 years it has "taken off"!

It doesn't look like it's had much room to grow, and there's something else in there too which may have inhibited it. Your cuttings may do better  :)

  • I think my plan will be to keep it under control then at the end of the flowering season cut right back, then in the spring have a go at digging it out and move it to a more suitable position. By then I should have some cuttings.

Thank you for your help guys.
