roses

Help!  I have 3 large old rose plants which have a wonderful scent, I noticed yellow and black spots on them, not to much I decided to spray with an organic fungicide. The roses are now covered all over every one, would it be safe to cut these roses right back at this time of year? Any advise would be appreciated, I don't want to loose my lovely roses.

You can cut them if you want, but I would not cut too far back as you will normally find a light shake of the branches, the leaves will fall off easily. You should clear up the fallen leaves promptly and never let them sit over the base of your roses over the winter time. The idea is to clear away chances of re-infection. Always a good idea to lay a new layer of compost or well rotted manure in spring.

Once black spot sets in, there really is nothing you can do to turn back the clock for the year. Many roses tend to succumb to it around late summer into autumn. Black spot will not kill your rose, it may look a bit sickly with the leaf colouration. It's only when back spot starts early in the growing season, it may knock the rose back a bit.
