Kale wilting overnight

Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas. This is my first time attempting to grow a vegetable - I planted some kale seeds and they all shot up fine and were doing well. Overnight the past 2 nights some of them have wilted out of nowhere and completely collapsed. I tried extra watering last night and woke up to more of them collapsed today. Does anyone have any ideas what happened or what I could do better?

Thank you

Most likely 'damping off' due to fungal infections from the soil.

  • I was hoping it wasn't so but it really does look like you're right. Thank you for the help!

We all suffer/deal with it.   :#.  Lots of info on the internet with advice on how to prevent it.  I use seed compost mixed with garden soil from my raised veg beds to start my seeds, so I am introducing both bad and GOOD microorganisms.. in the hope that the benefits I found by using garden soil outweigh the issues of the bad.
I have good success by increasing ventilation (open windows this spring for my windowsill grown seedlings) and by only watering with almost dry once seed leaves were up.  Not something I could do in past years, because of work.. but could do this year, for pandemic reasons.

    Good luck!
