Just planted a clematis to grow round an old tree. The plant looks very healthy but each time it develops new flowers the petals are being eaten. By what and how do I prevent this?

Slugs and/or vine weevil. Both will eat new flowers.
You can prevent by picking off as you see them, but eventually they become mature enough to cope better. Vine weevil are usually only apparent at night, although you might see them during the day.
Both can also be treated with Nematodes which you can buy online, but success often depends on several factors, and usually several applications.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • thank you I’ll try that 👍
  • Also earwigs can make a mess, try this, roll up a newspaper tightly and wet it thoroughly, leave it overnight in a ring round the base of the clematis, in the morning open it up gently and shake out the earwigs.
  • Thanks will go thanks will give it ago 👍
