More advice please pruning / cutting back !

I have 2  plants in my front garden  -  the grass plant below   can I prune back some of the grasses as they are covering my box hedges! Plant 2  has the big orange  seed thing coming out of it - can I cut ths off?

    I'd get that out asap. It's a real thug. Carex pendula

    The 2nd plant is a phormium, and yes, just cut the flower stalk off down near it's base  :)
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....



    I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

    Ahh - that looks very much like the bugger I dug out the other week. Took some removing and I'm not sure I've got it all as there was an old tree stump plus roots in the way.
