Magnolia deadwood?

Hi, this magnolia was planted 12 months ago. Some of the main stems had no leaves or buds this year and appear to be deadwood.

I know you shouldn’t prune a magnolia, but should I thin these out?

Also is there a disease on the stems?

Thanks

I would carefully prune them out, back to living growth.  Cut at a slight diagonal so water will run off.  It doesn’t look like disease, just insect holes and decomposition.  Could be wrong though, hopefully someone can correct me.
