Lawn Turning Brown

Hi everyone,

I'm new here and also a new Gardner. I've spent the last few years trying to teach myself how to grow and maintain a nicr lawn.

I had a big moss problem earlier this year so applied a moss killer and scarified. I then reseeded and finally got myself a lovely green lawn. This has only lasted a few months though and I'm starting to get brown patches which seems to be spreading!

I've searched endlessly online but can't really pinpoint what the issue is.

Any help would be much appreciatedo

That looks like thatch to me - bits of cut grass that fall from the mower and dry out and go brown.  Other than that it's looking good.

You can rake the thatch up with a spring-tined rake and that will improve airflow and water to the grass roots and help it grow more strongly.   Keep the cut high for now as the more leaf surface there is the more the grass can feed and strengthen its roots to help get it thru winter.

You might also want to check your mower blades are good and sharp and that the underside of your mower is clean and not clogged up with cut grass.

  • Thank you. I will try raking it.
