When to replant a Hydrangea?

I have a very healthy Hydrangea that is currently in a large planter, but I want to plant it in the ground. When is the best time to do that?

Just prep the site well, water it thoroughly first, and keep it well watered afterwards until autumn, when the weather will help and the shrub will be largely dormant.
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
