Alliums

I'm a complete novice who likes to dabble in my garden, I've created a bit of a wildlife patch with buddleia bushes at the back and Verbena. There is also cat mint and something called cherry lips.

I have ordered some Allium bulbs to put in, any tips or advice when it comes to growing Alliums?

  • Plant in the autumn, as you would with daffodils and tulips, three times the depth of the bulb. I wouldn't expect your order to come until that time of year anyway. They appreciate good drainage and do not need a particularly fertile soil.

As sunny a site as you can give them, or they will tend to lean to get more light. Having some supports in place early on if you go for the big ones can also help, although ideally - you would have other planting around them to give them support. Don't be surprised if the foliage looks quite tatty a good while before they flower too. That's quite common with them too, and the other planting helps hide it.

Depending in your climate and conditions where you are, you may find they don't all come back, but it can be beneficial to give them a small feed after they finish and are dying back.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
