Need fast growing small lettuce?

Does anyone know of a small lettuce that I can grow indoors from seed in a solo cup? Would love it if it can be harvested quickly too. Thanks!

  • Have you got any grow lights? Can't imagine trying to grow salad crops without them indoors would be wildly successful.

  • If yes, then maybe worth looking at the salanova series of seed that is specially selected for hydroponic and indoor cultivation. Some available here: https://justseed.com/products/rjkletorexper001

Little gem lettuce might work. From seed to picking is about 4 to 6 weeks. As they are the type you can take the outer leaves from as they grow, one plant lasts quite a while.
  • Nice thank you! Ordering now! Anyone else have anymore suggestion?

I think those cut and come again mixes are great.. some germinate quickly while others gradually fill in.  Just a thin pinch in each cup, and then cut outside leaves off or just cut everything back to within a few inches multiple times.

Also consider just cutting the side off a plastic half gallon container from milk or OJ or such to use as your windowsill container.  It will be easier maintenance compared to tons of small cups.  Put your grow light on a timer above to extend the light.  Also consider reflective material behind.. I sometimes use foil and have also used one of those silver reflective things for car windshields (I found it trapped the heat too much for my climate, but it might work for yours).

I also made drainage trays from a double thickness of heavy duty aluminum foil, but those disposable foil cooking trays from Poundland work better, or even their plastic trays.  You don't need drainage holes if you're super careful with watering though, especially if you put some grit or gravel in the bottom before adding soil.
