What’s wrong with not lawn

Hi,

Can anyone tell me what this straw like stuff is on my lawn? I’ve reseeded the lawn this year with The Grass People Steadfast Shade and it’s generally much better but this stuff has appeared over about half the lawn in the last couple of weeks. Not sure if it’s dead grass or some sort of straw?

 Any help would be appreciated.

 Thanks.

Looks like dead grass to me. The ends of your grass look very ragged so does your mower blade need attention as you might be pulling it out in places as you mow as the grass is fairly new and probably roots still weak.

    I agree with @K67

It looks as if your mower blade needs sharpening.

@WonkyWomble recommended a Darlac Tungsten Sharpener to me the other week... I got one and I must say it really does the job on a bit of a chewed up blade. Costs less than a tenner online

  • Thanks both. I've ordered a Darlac sharpener.

Hope it sorts the problem. 🤞

  • And I started reading thinking this would be a post extolling the virtues of not bothering with a lawn ;) was disappointed.

I have today taken delivery of a superb book called 'Tapestry Lawns Freed from Grass and Full of Flowers) by Lionel Smith
I may well get rid of my grass lawn and try a Tapestry Lawn instead!

  • Good luck @madpenguin sounds like a fun reuse of the space. Our lawn is the exclusive preserve of my other half...if it was up to me it'd be another flower bed ;)

The Tapestry Lawn seems to be very much a flower bed carpet which can be mown.
Still reading the book right now and it is quite fascinating.
