Scarlet star curling leaves

Hi. I got this plant 2 months ago. Didn’t come with care instructions. Now my leaves are starting to curling and the top which was white is turning brown.
Have I done something wrong with it?
Only now I have looked up the name of the plant and it says I should water the crown/center and not it’s base (which is what I’ve been doing). Have I killed it?
