Dahlia heads flopping

Hi everybody.  Feeling sorry for my dahlias, 3rd season, in a tub as usual.  Lovely flowers but the heads are flopping over.  The stem becomes narrow and ill looking right at the top. Thankyou.

sounds like a combination of poor watering / lack of food

Can we have a pic, are they big heavy heads, I have the cactus and dinner plates, they need a lot of support

There are some types advertised as 'dinnerplate' and they look fantastic in the photographs but they are a pain in the posterior because they are too heavy for the plant and need support for each flower.

In pots they need a huge amount of water, and yes, always some support, all ours have supports

One of mine fell over today. Fortunately it was in a container near a wall so I've turned it around and will try to rig up some supports tomorrow.
    In London. Keen but lazy.
