Is my tree dead?

I have three Cercis canadensis “Forest Pansy” American Redbud trees in a row. They were planted from the nursery as standard trees two and a half years ago.  The leaves on the middle one are shrivelled and the other two appear generally unaffected.  Growth has been slower on the middle one and over a very short period of time ( a few days the leaves shrivelled.  Is the tree dead?  Can it be saved?  The effected tree is the top photo and the healthy tree is the lower photo.

These trees are very sensitive to drought and whole stems can die off as the tree protects itself (a process called 'self pruning'), so don't give up hope.  Give them all plenty of water until the winter and with a bit of luck you'll see new growth (which may come from below ground rather than existing wood) but perhaps not until next spring.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Thanks Bob, that was very helpful.  I watered and fed them well for the first two years but not much this year and we had a warm dry spring with two bouts of high winds in the summer.  They will be well watered in the future.
