Sunflower and additional buds

I didn't know that sunflowers could have more than one flower? It is the first time I have grown then and this one is over 6ft tall and looks to have a few buds on the stem as well as the flower at the top. Is this normal?

    Depends on the variety, some have multiple heads, some have just one.

    More bang for your buck @nikkidenham1965 ;)
    Lots of varieties now have multiple heads, and are also shorter, so they're good border plants, as opposed to the usual idea of the giant single flowered types, which are great for getting children interested  :)
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....



    I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
