Which compost is best to use in new vegetable trug?

I have recently purchased a ‘vegetable trug’ (Large Wooden planter on legs for growing Vegetables) but am unsure which compost to use - is John Innes No 3 too heavy?
Although it is very late in the season which vegetables can I grow to get a crop in autumn, if any?
