Hozelock Cascade 1500 intermittent fault

I have a Hozelock Cascade 1500 pump for aerating my garden pond. it's a few years old and has worked well. Lately it's developed a fault where it stops pumping for a few minutes, then starts again for a few minutes. On Off on Off continuosly. I've stripped it down and cleaned it and fitted a new impeller-spindle and bearing assembly but that hasn't fixed it. I can't understand the problem. You'd think it'd either work  or not work. There's not a lot to the pump. What could go wrong?

    Have you contacted Hozelock?
Could the water supply pipes be a bit clogged or restricted somewhere?

Could it be that some debris is getting into the pump which stops it, then the debris clears and it starts up again?
Have you tried putting the pump in a big bucket of clean water (or your bath - with care :)) and see if it stops and starts?
